On June 25th the UNFPA Representative in the Russian Federation, Mr. Karl Kulessa, has held a working meeting with the President of the Republic of Bashkortostan Murtaza Rakhimov. The meeting was held in the House of the Republic in Ufa. The UNFPA Representative has arrived to the capital of Bashkortostan to attend the All-Russia Workshop "Demographic Development of Russia and its regions”, carried out within the 15 th anniversary of the adoption of the Cairo Programme of Action on population and development.

Special Youth Programme Interships in the UNFPA

In 2010 UNFPA Office in Russia continues to support the youth fellowships under the Special Youth Programme (SMP). During this new batch of fellowships UNFPA will put special focus on the experience of the Network Y-PEER Russia with vulnerable young people and promoting the peer education principle. The youth fellows will vist the following UNFPA partner organizations working in Chelyabinsk and Irkutsk.

NEW YORK – The combination of extremely low birth rates, migration losses and moderate mortality is leading to both rapid population decline and ageing in many countries in Eastern Europe and Central Asia. Because this is an unprecedented phenomenon, the international community cannot provide these countries with policy advice or reference to best practices elsewhere. These are findings of a new UNFPA publication entitled, Emerging Population Issues in Eastern Europe and Central Asia: Research Gaps on Demographic Trends, Human Capital and Climate Change.

United Nations Populations Fund (UNFPA) issued a special report on the 15 th anniversary of the Cairo International Conference on Population and Development. March 31 at the Central House of Journalists UNFPA held a press conference for presentation of the report "Social and demographic development of Russia”. Leading demographers, public officials and the media discussed the situation and development prospects of the country’s population.
